Carl Barat recently performed with Brett Anderson and Jon McClure at Jack Daniel's Birthday Set. We chat to him about his new album, life after Dirty Pretty Things, The Libertines and getting back with Pete Doherty.

There's someone singing 'Tony Tiger balm' on your voicemail message. What's that all about?
That's Noel Fielding. I don't have to listen to it but it drives some people mental.

What are you up to at the moment?
I'm in the studio producing this guy called Kieran Leonard. He's a folky roots singer songwriter and the new wave of grunge.

What's happening with your solo stuff?
I've got the best part of the album written and it should be ready early next year. It's great to do something without thrashing guitars, that's more naked and honest. I've been listening to Bonnie Prince Billy and Tom Waits.

Any plans for another Libertines reunion?
I'm busy next year and I'm not sure the world needs it right now. Maybe the year after.

Do you see much of Pete?
No, I haven't seen him for a while. People keep texting me pretending to be Pete. The night before last I got one saying, 'Hey, it's Pete, are you on for tomorrow?' So I texted back, 'Which Pete and what's happening?' and he said 'Pete D. We're playing The Joiners in Southampton, are you on?' so I ignored that one. It's just kids trying to hoodwink you into a reunion.

You played Gene Vincent in Telstar, any more acting jobs in the pipeline?
I'm doing a couple of plays in London in the New Year. They're pretty full on, I can't say any more than that.

What's your favourite lyric?
'My TV won't stop selling me stuff.' It's from Jerusalem by Kieran Leonard.

What's your favourite studio snack?
Ginsters, for ease - I like the new chicken and mozzarella one.

Talking of Pete - any tips for dealing with naughty best friends?
Play along and then cut the elastic in their pants when they're not looking.
